John Francis O'Meara, Jr.

Winsted:  John Francis O'Meara, Jr. 84, died on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, at Hartford Hospital following a short illness.  He was the husband of the late Bridget (Canny) O'Meara who died in June of last year.  Born December 1, 1935, in Hartford, he was the son of the late John O'Meara, Sr., and Nora (Hunt) O'Meara.  He had attended local schools in Hartford and graduated from Weaver High School in Hartford.  He was also a member of the Irish Club.  After school, he joined the Army Engineers Battalion where he was active building bridges.  He was a 30 year member of the International Association of Firefighters, Local 1241, where he served in the West Hartford Fire Dept. from 1962-1992.  He worked at various construction jobs and was very handy with cars.  John was a collector of guns although he was not a hunter, he enjoyed swimming, working with tools and carpentry, (he renovated 2 homes) and was a real home body.  He enjoyed going to the lake, boating, walking, fishing and watching CNN to catch the current events of the day.  He is survived by his children, John Clark O'Meara of Willimantic, Mary Chaffee of East Otis, MA; Kelly Ann LaForest of Boynton Beach, FL, and Amy Nelson of Springfield, MA;  two brothers, Thomas (Mary) O'Meara and James O'Meara and sister-in-law,  Celina O'Meara; six grandchildren, Jason Daniel Chaffee, Erin Chaffee Edwards, Adam J. Chaffee and Paige O'Meara; Jennifer LaForest and Danielle Burke; seven great grandchildren, Nya Marie Chaffee, Alyssa Chaffee, Daniel Chaffee, Atticus Chaffee, Emmeline Chaffee. Evelyn Rose Edwards, Ian Edwards, and several nieces and nephews.   He was predeceased by a  brother Peter O’Meara.  Private graveside services will be held in October 10, 2020 at 11:00 am. In Forest View Cemetery in Winsted.
