Winsted: JoAnn Beverly Rines, 83, died on Sunday, December 6, 2020, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, following a short illness. She was the wife of the late Carroll Rines who died in 2011. Born in Casco, Maine, on April 2, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Rayford and Claire (Frank) Thurston. She came to Winsted as a young teen. She was a graduate of The Gilbert School, class of 1955. During her working career, she worked for various mfg. companies in the area and retired from Precision Ball with over 20 years of service. She belonged to VFW Post 296 and BPOE 844. She was a good cook. Her specialty was apple pie and baked beans (always the yellow-eyed beans). She enjoyed canning produce from the big garden her late husband planted, bread & butter pickles, tomatoes and green beans. She had a determined spirit, was a hard worker and was considered a lucky lady when it came to Keno. She enjoyed country music. Joan and Carroll loved taking car trips to Maine, especially the coastal area, New York, New England and even Canada. Her survivors include three sons, Michael Rines, (Kate) of Torrington, Jeffrey Rines (Cindy) of West Hartland and Timothy Rines (Denise) of Frankford, DE. three sisters, Natalie Merrill of Wallingford, Ruth Robinson of Naples, ME and Dorothy McAllister of FL; six grandchildren, Chris, Sarah, Mike Jr, Jessica, Justin and Kelci; six great grandchildren, Bradley, Sophia, Olivia, Bella, Ian and Connor. She is also survived by many adoring nieces and nephews. Joan was also loved by the many friends who enjoyed her company. She was predeceased by a son, Steven, a brother, Richard Thurston and a sister, Esther Martocchio. Graveside services will be held in Forest View Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you please lift a glass and give a toast to Joan for a life well lived and a job well done!
