Francis Nichols Obituary

Francis P. Nichols   Worked at J.B. Nichols & Sons

Francis Paul Nichols, 89, entered in heaven’s gates on Sunday, 16 August 2020.He was born on 12 August 1931 to Joseph and Nadima (Edna) Nichols. Nick had eyes that would sparkle, a smile that would warm a heart on the coldest winter’s day, and a strong handshake or hug to make one feel special.  His enormous Lebanese family brought him so much joy, and he was well known on the grill from the infamous sausage patty to his mouthwatering butterfly lamb which woke the taste buds of many.  Side by side with his wife Joann, he would orchestrate gatherings for family and friends; with the fete on Christmas Eve. Food, videos of the entire family, and libations will be remembered and memorialized. Nick kept lifelong friendships from his high school years. On many occasions, the quartet would put music in the air.  And could he dance…He attended Bryant College and later served his county during the Korean War as a quartermaster in the US Army. Soon after he met Joann, they married and had three sons and a daughter.  They loved to travel and visited many countries throughout Europe, the UK and the Balkans.  The store on Park Place was not just a grocery store that happened to have the best meat in town; it was the ‘Grand Central Station’ for family, friends and customers which his parents founded.  He and his brother George kept the business going and employed multiple family members.  It was such a great experience for his customers either in the store or on the receiving end of a home delivery.  After the store closed, Nick worked part time with Super Saver.  Nick loved golf, spending time with family, had the same best friends from his childhood years and tending his beautiful flowers. Multiple varieties of begonias were his specialty. Poison ivy was his nemesis. He found peace and solace in his patio during the summer months. Nick was a lifelong member of the Winsted Elks; member of the VFW, the Maaser El-Chouf Association, and past Kiwanian.  Grieving his loss is his wife Joann of 65 years; children Jeffrey Nichols, Gregory (Lorrie) Nichols, Laura (James) Nichols Kelly; and James (Hui-Hua) Nichols.  Mourning with them are seven grandchildren; Meaghan (Tino) Alfereti, Travis Nichols, Tara (Philip) Nichols Strandwitz; Cody (Diana) Nichols, Matthew Kelly, Madison Kelly, and Bradley Nichols; two great grandchildren; Walter and Thomas Alfereti. three sisters, Lorice A. Resha, Genevieve M. Hill and Dolores Blanchette. In ddition to his parents,  he was predeceased  by a brother, George Nichols and a sister, Marie.  A drive by condolence will take place on Friday, 28 August from 4-6 p.m. at 110 Roberts Ave.  Services will take place at St Joseph’s Church on Saturday, 29 August at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph new Cemetery with full military honors. As an alternative to flowers, donations can be made to Maaser El-Chouf Association or Foothills VNA. Maloney Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
