Arnold Travaglin, Jr. Obituary

Arnold “Skip” Travaglin Jr. 74, A beloved Father, Grandfather and Friend passed peacefully after a long illness on Wednesday July 24, 2019.  Skip was born September 2, 1944 in Winsted to the late Arnold Travaglin Sr. & Edith Serluco Travaglin.  He was predeceased his only brother Thomas A. Travaglin of Colebrook.  He is survived by two sons Griff & Donny Travaglin both of Winsted and his grandchildren Jacob, Caroline & Olivia.  During his senior year 1963 at The Gilbert School, he was a member of the only undefeated football team in school history.  After graduating, he was employed for several years at Winsted Precision Ball until retiring and becoming a long time Inspector for the CT Department of Motor Vehicle. Following his last retirement in 2011 he was often found with best friends Paul, Carmen, Roddy, Gary at several local businesses throughout the day telling stories of the “old times” He was a selfless dedicated servant to the community and organizations within the community he lived his entire life.  He was a founding charter member of the Winsted Volunteer Ambulance, a past Grand Night of the Knights of Columbus and member of the Winsted Elks.  During the 1980’s he served as a Selectman in town and as Commissioner of the Highland Lake Association.  He also coached youth for many years in Midget Football and Winsted Youth Baseball.  He had a passion for motorsports and served as a crew member for the late Martin Riiska’s Yellow X.  This enthusiasm led to him years later owning the Travaglin Racing team.  It all began with a tribute Yellow X Mini Stock car which went on to win a championship at the old Riverside Speedway with his youngest son Donny behind the wheel.  Later moving up through the divisions of Late Model, SK Modified and eventually the Modified Tour Series.  For many years the team hosted food & toy drives to support local shelters and their families, including appearances for the Make a Wish Foundation.   It was a family affair with both sons involved along with great friends, Paul, Gator, Rita, Danny, Mike and Brian.   He enjoyed playing 9-5 with his son Griff in tournaments throughout the winters and weekly games at his house with his oldest friend Paul, DJ, John & Griff. He will always been remembered as a kind, genuine and caring person who had an impact on everyone in his life.  His rolodex of the best stories every told will carry on forever along with the catch phrase “that reminds me of the story of”.  His love for his grandchildren was like no other, each will have their own special memories to last them their entire lives. Calling hours will be Friday August 2nd from 5-8pm at the Maloney Funeral Home with Funeral Services Saturday August 3rd 11am at the St. Josephs Church Winsted.  Burial will immediately follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Pleasant Valley.   Following, everyone is welcome back to celebrate his life at the Knights of Columbus on Coe Street Winsted.
