I met him when I was about 12. My family had gone to see Crazy Horse (so much better than Mt Rushmore) that summer for our vacation, along with a lot of other places on the way to and from. I had previously bought a cassette copy of his first album somewhere around Wounded Knee and Little Bighorn. When I found him at Crazy Horse that day though, after having listened to his flute music and feeling connected with part of my own heritage that my father had not been allowed was moving. I asked for his autograph that day, and later as an adult when I found him on Myspace he seemed to remember me. I regret falling out of touch with him. My prayers to up for his family. I hope his albums are still being sold as I wish to purchase more of his music, when I can, in support of his family. I do not know if he was ever aware of how much of an influence he and his music were on my life. Someday I hope to meet him again.

Mr. Firecrow was the first Flute Player I heard while I lived in Crow Agency. His wonderful playing reached my heart and since that time back in 1998 - I love to listen to his wonderful sound. Thank you for this amazing gift to all of us. My prayers goes to the family. Sending you warm thoughts from Switzerland. Nathalie

We crossed this road of life long ago. He already an accomplished maker of beauty with sound. I , decades older and trying desperately to hold on to my "roots" via my flutes... The booming laugh I mentioned to him. He smiled a booming smile, and cautioned me to let the wood sing, allow the Great Spirit who fashioned us all to connect my heart to my brother in the wood. He also became my brother from his loving kind heart and changed my music and my flutes into Their expression and Their Heart... He taught so many like me to redirect our anger against the Newcomer into direct and open acceptance that we are still here and we must follow the Great Spirit's constant love of all...Illappa Moh^Mah "walk in Beauty Forever and Always...My Brother Sound Maker

My condolences to Joann and family . Last time my Brother , Dennis Pierce and I saw both of you was last November at the Bridgewater State U. Pow Wow . Even though Joseph was ailing , he spoke of tribal and flute heritage to the gathering and played heart felt songs . Joseph was the third friend I lost in three weeks . Last Sunday , as I rolled out my motorcycle , I found three hawk feathers in my driveway. I now take them as gifts from my friends . Today , I can listen to beautiful songs of my friend and mentor on recordings , but will have to wait , to laugh With him again .

We think of him as a young man as we knew him in his earlier years on the reservation and cherished his dear mother, Elva and father, Joe Fire Crow. He came from a long line of distinguished Cheyennes, including John Stands in Timber whose memoirs are contained in the book, "Cheyenne Memories." He comes from kind, gentle people who cared about others - as he did about us during the terrible Ash Creek Fire, the worst in Montana's history, that took our home and many others. He held a benefit for us and gave us a generous award to help each of us back to recovery of home and possessions. Thank you dear friend for your beautiful heart. That is why your music was so beautiful. Thank you.

I was blessed to speak to Joseph over the phone during a conference call once, many years ago. But, even through the phone, it was obvious he was a very special person. I followed his career through the years and I was inspired to be better at playing my flute by listening to his music. He was a major influence in my music as well as my life. Many times he was in my thoughts as I wrote the music for our native influenced band, Red All Over Project. Naturally, all our band members and families are so saddened by his passing. We are all in agreement that his music touched us all but, it was his influence on the world around him and our lives that was the most notable. He has spread a unique love and a wonderful sense of humor that could change the world. And he certainly changed us, for the better. All our love and prayers for comfort to the family. This man was a blessing to us all.

Dear family we were very saddened to hear of Joseph,Firecrows new journey. We were honored to hear and meet him at our daughters school on Colebrook, CT . After that first introduction we were hooked , we would see him a few times there after for performances. What a beautiful soul. He will be missed but he left a great impact. Blessing to the family.

May your songs of the winds and clouds sweep the pain and sadness out of my friends' hearts; as they hear those songs, let them know the spirits who are with those songs are at peace.
May the Great Spirit watch over you, and may you be at peace Joe Firecrow Jr. your greatness will live on forever.

My dear friend and sister Joann, I will always treasure the precious times spent with you and Joe . I find it surreal that I am even writing this ,,, that our last visit was just 2 weeks ago and filled with hope and optimism,,, Creator had other plans,,, Joes life was a blessing to all that had the opportunity to speak with him. His steadfast love for you was rare and so beautiful. To his family, I send my deepest hopes and wishes that your time of sorrow will be eased with comfort and grace ,,, that you will feel Joes warm and loving spirit as he loved you all. The world has lost an amazing man,,, the ancestors have welcomed him back home and he has taken a piece of everyone's heart with him.
Much love to you all,
Deb Bentley

We are told that the grief from the death of a loved one scatters the logs of our fire and leaves our heads lying on the ground. May the warm sentiments from all those who cared about this man of many talents help to rebuild that fire and lift your heads. We were honored by his life.

Joseph was one of the most humble and genuine artists from the Native music community. His big, beautiful smile, sincere kindness and undeniable talent touched and influenced everyone in his path. I am heartbroken.  Not only was he one of our leading Award winners, but even more than that, he was an incredible human being who was truly loved by all.  On behalf of my family and the entire NAMA family, I extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Joann, and to their family.  We will all miss him dearly and deeply. He will remain one of the most influential flute players and musicians in the Native music community whose work will continue to inspire many.

To a man who I will miss dearly. I will miss your music when I saw it live the most! I met you and your wife 3 years ago on a Pagan camping trip and you Joe changed my life forever! I was just getting into meditation and your amazing flute music help me flourish into a calm and peaceful world I never knew before. My family has welcomed you and Joanne ever since! I will never forget the day you came to our house for a cookout and we hoped you would play and when you did it was paradise! Thank you for changing my life forever! I play your music and listen to your stories and I will never forget you. My heart is sad that you are gone but you will forever live in my memories and I will always tell your stories. Forever in my heart Joe hope you are with your Mom

My deepest condolences to the family of this wonderful person. I was blessed to go to high school, and know Joe as friend in Busby Montana. He had such a contagious smile, and a very happy, and friendly personality. He made everyone feel as if they were his friend. His talent will be missed, but what he was able to leave us with will be listened to for all time. Haho to his family for sharing this wonderful person with us. May Maheo bless you all with peace, and comfort during this time of mourning.

To Joseph FireCrow: Rest in Peace.
My Friend. My Brother. I will miss you physically, but I still see your smile and feel that bear hug, Wounded Bear hug, every time we crossed paths. These things, I will never forget. You drew your signature feather on a piece of paper so I could add it to a tattoo I was getting. I am honored and thankful. You are with me always. I am thankful to the Creator for bringing us together.
Creator will make you whole again. You will play, sing and dance again. Play on my Brother, play on.

Mr. Firecrow was a very nice man, his flutes were beautiful. His music is one of a kind. I just want to thank him and his wife for coming to my dads service and playing the flute. I will always remember you for that. The respect you had for my dad, and his respect was the same for you. I will listen to your music for a long time to come. Thank you for your caring ways and beautiful music.

It was with tremendous sadness that we had learned of Joseph's passing back to the Land of Spirit. We did not know him well but the Joseph we did know was Gracious, Kind, Gentle and Genuine. He was one of the most loving souls we have ever had the honor of meeting. Please know that you all are in our prayers during this difficult time of transition and saying good-bye. He was a very rare and cherished being.
