Francis Nelligan Obituary

Winsted:  Francis Edward Nelligan passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on August 24, 2018 with his family by his side. Born in New York City on May 27, 1928 to the late Alma (Moran) and Francis J. Nelligan, Frank  was raised in Waterbury, attended Driggs Elementary School and graduated from Wilby High School, President of his class and voted most likely to succeed.  After his father's death, his mother re-married Leslie Feero who raised Frank from the age of 9 years old. After graduating high school, Frank enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on active duty during the Korean War.  The Navy remained an important part of his life as he continued to serve in the Naval Reserve for 38 years.  He retired from the Navy as a Chief Warrant Officer and carried many memories of the travels around the world the Navy provided him. Frank graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1959.   He obtained his first job at the Gilbert School as a history and geography teacher.  He moved his young family to Winsted where he remained for almost 60 years, loving the small friendly town and making it a home. He later taught at Avon High School where he retired after over 35 years of teaching.  He made many friends in the Avon schools and taught his students the value of history and America's special place in the world. Frank also gave back to his small town.  He served on the Board of Education and Board of Selectmen.  He especially valued his 42 year membership in the Elks and his acceptance into the Winsted Raggys.  The friends he made were a comfort to him as his illness progressed. Frank enjoyed a wide variety of interests - music, photography, world travel, cooking, history and his Volvos. Frank is survived by his loving wife and companion of 62 years, Joan A. Nelligan. Also he leaves his son Kevin F. Nelligan and his wife Peg of Colebrook, daughter Kate Nelligan of Glastonbury, a Son Sean Nelligan of Uxbridge, Massachusetts, and a daughter Eileen Carpenter and her husband, the favorite son-in-law Skip Carpenter of Plymouth, CT.  He also leaves behind his grandchildren who will forever remember their Papa - Brendan Nelligan, Scout Nelligan, Patrick Nelligan, Owen Nelligan, Liam Nelligan, Owain Nelligan, Jack Carpenter and Grace Carpenter. Calling hours will be on Monday, August 27, 2018, at 5-8 PM at the Maloney Funeral Home 55 Walnut Street, Winsted.  A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Church in Winsted.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph new Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to St. Anthony School, 32 Oak Street, Winsted, CT 06098. To leave an online condolence, please visit www.maloneyfuneral.com.
