Bridget O'Meara

Winsted:  Bridget O'Meara, 84, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, following a long illness.  She was the wife of John O'Meara.  Born in Dunmore, Galway, Ireland, June 2, 1935, she was a daughter of the late John and Ellen (Martin) Canny.  She came to the U.S. at the age of 18 and had lived in Winsted for the past 30 years.  She was a long time member of St. Joseph Church in Winsted and the Irish Club in Hartford.  When she first came to the U.S. she worked as a Nanny for several families.  She had a deep understanding of children and their needs and interests.  So much so, the children hated for her to leave at the end of the day.  She used to tell them she had to go to work at the popsicle factory when she left so they wouldn't be so sad.  She loved working on her flower garden, and loved to take her grandchildren, nieces and nephews to the cabin by the lake in Otis, so they could swim and have fun.  She was a good mother and a good wife who loved to cook fresh meals in the old Irish way.  She was also very encouraging when anyone who confided in her about anything that was bothering them at that time.  In addition to her loving husband of 62 years, she leaves her daughter, Mary Chaffee of East Otis, MA; step-son, John C. O'Meara of Willimantic; two sisters, Margaret Whitman of Enfield and Mary Kelly of Galway, Dunmore, Ireland; four grandchildren, Jason Daniel Chaffee, Erin Edward, Adam J. Chaffee, Paige O'Meara and seven great grandchildren; she also leaves several nieces and nephews, Ellen & Susan Grady, Mary Grady Arni, and one nephew, Kevin Grady.  She was predeceased by two sisters, Helena & Nora; five brothers, Patrick, Thomas, Ted, Dennis and John and one nephew Martin Grady and nieces Deborah Grady Girard and Margaret Nolan. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21, at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Church in Winsted.  Burial will follow in Forest View Cemetery in Winsted.  Friends and family may call at the Maloney Funeral Home 55 Walnut Street, Winsted, on Thursday, June 20, from 2-4 PM.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of CT, 2075 Silas Deane Highway, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
