Richard Carter Obituary

Richard (Dick) W Carter, 76, of Torrington, CT passed away on Sunday December 30, 2018 after a lengthy illness surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born in Torrington, CT on April 21, 1942 to the late Harold & Mary (Gajeski) Carter. Richard is survived his wife, Tillie, daughter, Laura, son, Lee and his wife Amy and grand-children Victoria, Macie and Mason, son, Richard and his family, a brother, Leslie Carter and his wife Karen, all of Torrington;  a sister, Phyllis Ryan of Largo, Fla., sister Nanette Kibbe and husband Donald of New Port Richey, Fla and several nieces and nephews.  Richard was pre-deceased by his two brothers, Lawrence and Harold Carter all of Winsted, CT and a brother-in-law Michael Ryan of Largo, Florida. Richard loved his family and he was a loving husband and dedicated father and grandfather.  A dependable, hardworking and honest man, he was always willing to help anyone at any time. Richard loved trains, eagles and his beloved German Shepherd Dogs, all of which he talked about often.  As an avid licensed amateur radio operator, he made many friends across the country and around the world with his extensive radio collection.   He was very active in The National Weather service Skywarn program. SkyWarn is a program used to help notify and predict severe weather conditions and paths of storms with the use of local amateur radio operators.  He briefly was a member of both the Tariffville and Collinsville Volunteer Fire Departments, where he helped as he could as often as he could.  He was an employee at the former Union Pin Company, working there for over 25 years and held other positions in other companies over the years. He loved his cars and would spend hours cleaning and polishing them to make them look pristine.  Great with his hands, he was able to build anything.  He loved wood working and built many pieces of furniture that are today still in use around the family home. He loved to tinker with anything electronic, especially his radios and was always making repairs.   An avid NASCAR and Yankees fan, he would watch either at any opportunity. At the end of his life Richard resided at Regal Care Nursing home where he was tenderly cared for by the wonderful staff during his residency.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Richard’s name to American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Calling hours will be on Friday, January 11, 2019 from 12:30 – 2:30 PM with a memorial service immediately following at the Maloney Funeral Home, 55 Walnut Street, Winsted.
