Winsted:  John F. Athorn, Jr., 81, passed away at his home on May 24, 2016,  John was born in Winsted, CT on June 22, 1934.  He was the third child of four and the only son of the late Elizabeth Julian and John F. Athorn, Sr.  John grew up in Winsted and graduated from The Gilbert School in 1953.   After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War as a medical corpsman.  He served honorably for four years.  Upon his discharge, John married Gloria Mazzarella who was also a lifelong resident of Winsted.  John had a vast and diverse professional career, ranging from owner of Benny Nero's Restaurant to HR director of the Winsted Precision Ball Corp. to CFO of The Memory Training Institute in Portland, CT.  John's survivors include two sons,  John J. Athorn and his wife Deborah and Blane M. Athorn and his wife Robin; his oldest sister, Elizabeth Follert of New Hartford; his former wife, Gloria; three granddaughters, Chelsea, Lauren and Dana and a multitude of nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by two sisters, Virginia Cook and Judith Scott.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on June 1, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Church on Main Street, in Winsted.  Burial will follow with full military honors in St. Joseph new Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Maloney Funeral Home 55 Walnut Street, Winsted on Tuesday, May 31, from 5-8 PM.  Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Post #296 or the Wounded Warrior Project.  To leave an online condolence, please visit www.maloneyfuneral.com.
